It’s been about 5 days since I’ve arrived in the small town of Geraki, Greece, the birthplace of my mother and where my immediate family still live and have called home for over 80 years, and I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else right now. As I reconnect with my family, I find that while sometimes things change, some things never do. My family lives life full of love and care for each other. They’re funny and optimistic of the future and take great pride in their work. My grandfather has grew up herding goats and tending to the family olive groves just as his father and his grandfather had before him. My Grandfather is 92 years old and still tends to his herd. Waking early every morning as he has his whole life. My Uncle has continued the family trade as well as my Aunts husband (Uncle-in-Law?) and their son. Together they own and operate a large olive grove that supplies Olive Oil and Olives across Greece.
“Good oil, like good wine, is a gift from the gods. The grape and the olive are among the priceless benefactions of the soil, and were destined, each in its way, to promote the welfare of man.”
